What Are Candid Photos and Why I End Every Photography Session With Them

In the world of photography, candid photos hold a special place. These images capture real, unposed moments that are full of life and authenticity. Unlike traditional, posed photographs where the subject is often aware of the camera and carefully arranged, candid shots are taken without the subject’s knowledge or intention. The result? Natural, raw moments that tell a story in the most genuine way possible.

When I began my photography journey I had decided that I wanted to capture the powerful and raw moments in life without planning and posing! One of the first dream photo session I had imaged being able to capture was a surprise proposal session (stay tuned in the beginning of December because......I HAVE ONE BOOKED AND I AM SO EXCITED!)

But, the real questions here are what makes candid photography so powerful, and why do I make it a point to end every photography session with one? Well, let’s take a small dive into the charm of candid photos and the reason they’re the perfect way to wrap up any shoot.

What Are Candid Photos?

At their core, candid photos are all about capturing life as it happens. They don’t follow the rules of posing, lighting setups, or formal directions. Instead, they rely on spontaneity and the unique, fleeting moments that unfold naturally. Whether it’s a smile shared between friends, a child lost in play, or a subject caught mid-laugh, candid shots are filled with energy and emotion.

The beauty of candid photography lies in its ability to preserve those authentic moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. A posed shot, while beautiful in its own way, can feel staged, with the subject holding a specific posture or smile that doesn’t fully reflect their true personality. Candid shots, on the other hand, reveal the essence of a person, a moment, or an interaction—unfiltered and honest.

Here we captured a little girl posing alone at the end of her family session because she wanted her own photo!

The Magic of Ending a Session with a Candid Photo

As a photographer, I’ve always believed in capturing the subject's true self—not just the way they look, but how they feel in a moment. And that’s why I make it a point to end every session with a candid shot. Here’s why:

1. A Natural Conclusion

After a session, both the subject and I have usually gotten into a rhythm. The poses and planned shots have been taken, and there’s often a sense of ease in the air. Ending with a candid photo allows the subject to relax fully and be themselves without the pressure of posing. This final moment is typically where people let their guard down and show their true, unguarded emotions. It's when the most genuine expressions appear.

2. The Best Moments Happen Spontaneously

Some of the most memorable moments in life happen when we least expect them. A laugh, a glance, or a moment of joy that happens naturally can’t always be predicted. By ending with a candid photo, I give myself the opportunity to capture that unexpected magic. It’s in these unplanned moments that a subject's personality truly shines through—something that posed photos can sometimes miss.

3. Creating a Lasting Memory

The beauty of candid photography is that it freezes a moment in time. These photos tell a story of who we were in that exact instant. When I end a session with a candid shot, I’m often capturing a moment of real emotion that serves as a beautiful reminder of the experience. Whether it’s a smile, a fleeting look, or a shared laugh, these moments are often the ones that linger in our memory long after the session ends.

A bond that grows with each passing moment — a niece's love for her baby cousin and an aunt's love for them both.

4. Fostering Comfort and Connection

As the session progresses, I build a rapport with the subject. By the time we’re wrapping up, there’s often a sense of trust and comfort. It’s when people feel at ease that they show their most authentic selves. The pressure of performing for the camera has long since passed, and the result is a shot that feels less like a "photo" and more like a captured memory. Ending the session this way also reinforces a feeling of intimacy and connection between the photographer and the subject.

5. Embracing Imperfection

Perfection isn’t the goal of a candid photograph—it’s about embracing the imperfections that make us human. A candid photo might have an out-of-focus background, a slightly awkward angle, or a spontaneous gesture that wasn’t planned. But these "flaws" are what make the photo real. They remind us that life isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present in the moment. The imperfections in a candid shot often turn out to be what makes it so beautiful.

A Few Final Thoughts for this post...

Candid photography is about more than just taking pictures; it’s about capturing life in its truest form. It’s a chance to freeze moments of real emotion, joy, and connection that might otherwise pass unnoticed. And by ending every session with a candid photo, I’m not just taking a picture—I’m capturing the spirit of the moment.

So, the next time you find yourself in front of my camera, don’t be surprised if I sneak in a candid shot at the end. It’s my way of capturing the real you—unposed, imperfect, and utterly authentic. And trust me, those are the moments that will stick with you forever.
