A photographer's dream come true: A Surprise Proposal in Downtown Chester with a Gilmore Girls Twist
As a photographer, there's nothing quite like capturing a moment that feels like it’s straight out of a dream. Recently, I had the pleasure of being part of one such moment—a surprise proposal in downtown Chester, set against a backdrop that felt reminiscent of the beloved town of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. The entire session was like a love letter to the small-town charm, with all the heartwarming nostalgia that fans of the show would recognize.
The Vision
When Shane reached out to me, he had a special vision for their engagement: a proposal set in a cozy, charming downtown area with charm and a place that his girlfriend will remember. To me that felt like it belonged in a Gilmore Girls episode. He wanted it to be intimate, personal, and full of surprises. He had mentioned the wishing booth in Chester—a picturesque town with cobblestone streets, quaint storefronts, and that timeless charm that would fit perfectly with the vibe they were looking for.
Shane's vision was beautiful on its own, but things didn't work from the first plan, but he didn't give up and had a back up plan.
When the back up plan did not pan out, Shane had asked me to help with the location. I went into this beautiful shop in Down Chester (The Wayfinder) and had asked if they could use the stairs and all the lights that were on the building. The shop owner was fantastic and allowed it to happen. Once the proposal happened I mentioned that the images from behind the camera were giving me Gilmore Girls Vibes. When this was mentioned Shane commented that it was one of Kaleigh's favorite shows and that he had mentioned to dress like they were in Stars Hallow.
From that moment, I knew that we could make this moment truly magical. From the dreamy set-up to the big question, everything had a perfect balance of nostalgia, romance, and a touch of whimsy. and from there I continued to work with locations in Chester to keep the vibe.
The Surprise Proposal
The day started with Kaleigh believing they were doing a casual Saturday outing at different locations and dinner. What she didn’t know was that Shane had planned the ultimate surprise: he was about to pop the question in the most memorable way possible. As they strolled down the charming streets of Chester, I prepared to capture the moment. When we reached a quiet little square that resembled the iconic town square from Gilmore Girls, the magic truly began.
Shane had arranged for a few subtle pops into the shops and brewery around the area. The Christmas lights that were hung the night before that brought the scene to life, and these soft fairy lights that flickered like something out of a dreamy fall evening in Stars Hollow. The scene was set, and I was ready to capture the moment when Shane would drop to one knee.
As they walked out of the shop, Shane stopped "to admire the view and the tree on the porch" Shane pulled out the ring, and I could see Kaleigh's face light up with surprise and joy. The moment felt like something out of a movie—a beautiful, intimate proposal filled with all the emotions one could imagine. I had the privilege of snapping the moment right as she said yes, surrounded by the charm of a small town that felt straight out of the Gilmore Girls universe.
A Perfect End to a Perfect Day
After the proposal, we took a little time to wander around the streets of Chester, continuing the session with shots that truly captured the essence of the day. We passed by antique shops, coffee houses, and little boutiques—each one adding to the magical, small-town feel. The final images were stunning—soft, romantic, and filled with so much genuine emotion.
It’s moments like these that remind me why I love being a photographer. Not only do I get to capture the love between two people, but I get to witness moments of pure joy that make everything worthwhile. This surprise proposal was a dream come true, and the magical blend of Gilmore Girls-inspired nostalgia made it even more special.
As I work to deliver the final gallery to Shane and Kaleigh I can't help but smile. I knew their love story would be one for the books, just like the perfect episodes of Gilmore Girls—full of laughter, love, and memories to last a lifetime.
